We have to let go of anxiety and worries. Abandoning ourselves means resting in something greater than ourselves; it means to stop being the center of our lives, rising above the natural self-centeredness that does not let us grow. It is recognizing that we are not in charge of life.

We must open ourselves up to life in a different way, based on fellowship, equality, trust, sharing, and collaboration.

The Camino shows us things are to be shared: that little bit of food, that pain remedy, that jacket that someone needs more than I do. We have to rise above the competitive environment of society and open ourselves up to life in a different way, based on fellowship, equality, trust, sharing, and collaboration. The backpack’s lesson, letting go of things, helps us to discover the true value of things. Our backpack teaches us about walking with a light load, about gaining a sense of freedom as we let go of things. It is the antidote for the temptation of believing that things will grant us freedom. Overloaded with a multitude of things in our daily life, we can discover, as on the Camino, that the only thing that makes sense is letting go because, in life, there are things that you have to let go of. We live better with less.
