This door, which allows access to the cathedral via
the Plaza de la Quintana, is only opened during Holy Years. You do not
have to go through the door to earn indulgences, but it is an
interesting tradition which marks for many pilgrims a special moment in
their pilgrimage during this special year.
This door was constructed at the end of the 15th
century, imitating the Holy Door which had been opened a few years
earlier in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Currently, the door is
presided over by an image of Santiago (St. James) the pilgrim (18th
century) which has images of his disciples Anastasio and Teodoro at its
sides. On both sides of the door there is a series of images in relief
which are from the ancient choir of Archbishop Gelmirez.
